Community really coming together on this one. Play the in game thing, well didn't think of that. I'm absolutely compelled by I don't think so and I don't know. I am a changed man.

Hmm, they're really out of date except when it comes to the basics but Macsen let's plays and I think Quill18 have some videos from a while ago that can help you get a basic overview, which is a start.

A few tips I would give you playing the game in it's current form:

1. Securing early colonies is generally key.
2. Think about the type of victory condition you want to pursue.
3. Make sure you continually maintain a standing fleet. All AI players will seek to exploit you militarily if you are week.
3. Use diplomacy to help gain techs and money.
4: trade ships can improve relations with other civs.
5. Food/population is the core of you economy. A large population nets you better multipliers from your production buildings, but this also needs to be balanced with approval. A happy populace is much more productive.
6. Scout out relics on the maps with your explorer ship. You can get some valuable bonuses.
7. Early ideology buildings can be very valuable, because one on each world of your empire can get you lots of ideology point over time.
8. Think of planets and the hex layout with an eye for planning. Buildings can get adjacency bonus from buildings that share the same type (ie. science next to science, etc) but there are also special buildings that confer significant bonuses in the tech tree. Also, terraforming allows you to often fill out gaps in the hex grid, very important.
9. Mining special resources is often crucial early game. Thallium archives and Durantium refineries are pretty much essential.
10. Use star bases to further boost planet production -- very important.

Maybe that will be a nice way of getting the basics down.

Don't forget the guides to get a general gist :)

To me the tutorial is pretty lackluster. It's only a simple and easy scenario with an ally and a single enemy. Doesn't really explain much, only the more basics things.
So I just threw myself on a new game and learned by mistake.
I'm really enjoying the game by the way!

I have GC 1, 2 and 3. Should I start with 1 and work up to 3 or just go into 3.

colonize and as part of that constructor steal good planets from neighbors early. Build up warships and focus on rapid R&D to get all the techs fast, then steam roll over the AI with military.
